All three of us Small Biz Start Up Guide authors agree that small businesses are the future. We think that our blog is a great place to showcase successful small business owners, and ask them some questions about how they got to where they are today!
Without further ado, meet Sarah Wintersteen of Sistered States Even Styling. We got to ask Sarah some questions about how, when, and why she started her small biz! Here are her answers!

Small Biz Owner:
When did you start Sistered States?
May 8th, 2016
Have you always wanted to be a Small Biz Owner?
I NEVER wanted to be a small business owner, I always liked the idea of working for someone else and not having that responsibility of running my own business.
What is your background in? Past jobs?
What experiences did you have that encouraged you to go out on your own?
My background is in child development. Wedding planning has always been an obsession/hobby throughout college. I never thought it was a job that people actually did as a career until I interned for a full service wedding planner. That is when I really saw that this passion could be a profession. Also growing up with parents and an older sister who run their own businesses definitely helped make the leap seem less scary and more of a natural next step.
What are some of the biggest small biz lessons you've learned along the way?
I learned that as much as I hate networking, it is necessary
In addition to networking, and as much as I hate posting on social media and being active on facebook, it is also necessary
What's something you wish all small biz owners knew?
It takes time to establish yourself and a client base, but just because you may only have one client doesn't mean you're any less of a professional or any less legitimate. Be proud of your small business and don't play the comparison game.
Is there an aspect of your small biz that you think you do particularly well?
Organization - being your own boss requires a lot of organization and a lot of self-motivation to actually get up and work when you could just as easily stay in bed and take a nap.
Is there an aspect of your small biz that you wish you were better at?
Networking and self promotion. I hate coming off like a sales person but it is required in order to 'sell yourself' to clients.
What makes your small biz unique?
What values do you bring to your client/customer that your competitors might not?
I think my small business is unique because I am younger than all of my clients. I can bring a fun youthful twist to what brides think a 'traditional' wedding should look like.
Where do you see your industry going in the next 3 to 5 years?:
I see my business growing into exclusively a full-service wedding service. As of now, I offer full service, partial service, and final month planning and am doing about 12 weddings a year. I would like to do about half the number of weddings but more of the planning!
